It is anticipated that a draft resolution on chemicals and waste will be discussed at UNEA-6 with the aim of endorsing the outcome of ICCM5. At ICCM5, a new Global Framework on Chemicals has been adopted to ensure that the production and use of chemicals do not pose any harm to human health and the environment and waste. Innovation focusing on sustainable solutions, thereby avoiding pollution already at the stage of the design of chemicals and products, is a fundamental basis for the achievement of the agreed vision and strategic objectives.
The implementation of the GFC requires strengthening the engagement of all stakeholders within their respective mandates as well as cooperation amongst stakeholders from various sectors. To achieve the objectives of the new framework, it is important to build the institutional capacities of governments and to actively foster the engagement and cooperative action of stakeholders from industry sectors across the value chain. Building on the respective targets of the framework, the development of implementation programmes has been agreed upon at ICCM5. Details of the implementation programmes need to be further discussed at ICCM 6.
Expected Outcome: - Introduce the new Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) – for a Planet Free of Harm from Chemicals and Waste, the Bonn Declaration, the GFC Fund, and resolutions adopted at the fifth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) in September 2023 in Bonn
- Raise awareness of the draft UNEA-6 Resolution on the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste suggesting endorsement of the GFC by UNEA
- Fostering cooperation amongst stakeholders across sectors, including economic sectors and science, to accelerate the implementation of the Global Framework on Chemicals
